The Sopranos is a hugely popular drama serial based on fictional mob chief Tony Soprano (James Gandolfini), who attempts to maintain control of his home family, business “family” and mind, exorcising psychological demons with shrink Jennifer Melfi (Lorraine Bracco). A violent adult thriller sprinkled with moments of comedy, The Sopranos raises questions of morality and takes us behind the facade of a Cosa Nostra Capo, seeing him at home and in the doctor’s office, as well as at work. Following a blackout, Tony seeks the assistance of a psychiatrist to help him focus, and retain power over his organisation, and he must juggle the demands of family life and business whilst keeping his sessions with Dr. Melfi secret from his “soldiers”, ambitious friends and enemies.

With a style worthy of cinema, The Sopranos is often credited with raising the artistic bar of television drama. Already hailed as a classic drama serial, Vanity Fair has dubbed The Sopranos “the greatest show in TV history”, whilst Newsweek called it "far and away, the best show on television." The New York Times has even considered The Sopranos to be possibly “the greatest work of American popular culture of the last quarter-century”'. The show has won twenty-one Emmys, including Outstanding Drama Series in 2004 and 2007, and five Golden Globes.
