Following in the footsteps of popular action dramas Water Rats and Blue Heelers, Hal McElroy’s creation Sea Patrol tells of the trials and interactions of the crew aboard the fictional Royal Australian Navy (Fremantle class) patrol boat HMAS Hammersley. The drama deals with the lives of crew members as they cope with the pressured conditions of a Navy boat at sea; living away from family for weeks at a time, sometimes months, amongst twenty four sailors in a forty-metre boat, with weather conditions often turbulent and temperatures often scorching.
The show is episodic, with a different mystery each instalment for the crew members to investigate. Issues dealt with include drug-running, people-smuggling, illegal fishing and immigration. With production costs of AU$15 million, Sea Patrol is one of Australia’s most ambitious action series ever. Locations for the show include Cairns, Dunk Island, Mission Beach and Cowley Beach near Innisfail (all Queensland), and the HMAS Waterhen Navy Base in Sydney (New South Wales). The cast is filled with celebrated Australian acting talent, including Ian Stenlake (Stingers), Lisa McCune (Blue Heelers), Kristian Schmid (Neighbours), John Batchelor (All Saints, Stingers) and Josh Lawson (Home And Away, Thank God You're Here).
