The premise of Prison Break’s first series offered a twist on the show’s title, with Michael Scofield (Wentworth Miller) intentionally getting himself sent to prison to assist in the breakout of his wrongfully accused brother (played by Dominic Purcell). On death row for a crime that he claims not to have committed, Lincoln Burrows (Purcell) is believed only by his brother, an engineer who conveniently helped design the prison holding Burrows. After breaking into the prison, Scofield discovers a conspiracy trying to uphold his brother’s sentence and must enlist the pair’s friend Veronica Donovan (played by Robin Tunney) to investigate on the outside. This leads to the ominous discovery of a secret organisation called The Company, whose influence extends to the White House and whose ultimate goal is control of the country’s economy.
The second series of Prison Break is described by creator Paul Scheuring as "The Fugitive times eight", continuing on from the escape of Burrows, Scofield and six other prisoners. With the authorities, as well as The Company, in pursuit, the escapees must follow their objectives whilst uncovering more about the sinister conspiracy.
Prison break was originally pitched to Fox Broadcasting Company by producer Dawn Parouse in 2003, but Fox doubted the long-term potential of such a story until similar large scale serial shows, like Lost and 24, took off to huge success. Steven Spielberg was interested in directing initially, before the schedule of War of the Worlds made his involvement impossible.
