With a storyline based on comic book fantasy, Heroes tells of several seemingly ordinary people who discover that they have abilities of superhuman power. Created by Tim Kring, the show is multi-episodic and features twelve main characters whose powers vary, but whose common goal is to avert catastrophe for all mankind.
The series’ original launch in the USA drew 14.3 million viewers - the highest NBC drama premiere rating for five years. The show airs in many countries, including France, Italy, Hong Kong, the UK, Finland, New Zealand and South Africa. The very first episode of Heroes sparked controversy resulting in NBC (the show’s broadcaster in America) being sued by the Emerson Electric Company, makers of the In-Sink-Erator. A scene is the episode shows character Claire Bennet (Hayden Panettiere) severely damage her hand after reaching into the appliance. The case was eventually settled out of court and the scene amended to remove the appliance’s title.
The show’s key characters derive from various places across the world, such as Los Angeles, Japan, Honduras, New York and India. These characters include:
Claire Bennet, a high school cheerleader who has the ability to spontaneously regenerate
Monica Dawson (Dana Davis), who can reproduce any physical action she witnesses
D.L. Hawkins (Leonard Roberts), who can vary his physical definition and travel through solid objects
Maya Herrera (Dania Ramírez), a fugitive on the run from the police who can produce a virus fatal to anyone near her when under stress
Takezo Kensei (David Anders), a warrior who can spontaneously regenerate
Isaac Mendez (Santiago Cabrera), an artist able to paint future events during trances
Hiro Nakamura (Masi Oka), a programmer with the ability to manipulate time and space
Matt Parkman (Greg Grunberg, who also played the pilot in “Lost”), a police officer who can hear other people’s thoughts
Nathan Petrelli (Adrian Pasdar), a Congressional candidate with the ability to fly.
Peter Petrelli (Milo Ventimiglia), Nathan’s younger brother, a former hospice nurse able to absorb the powers of others and use them (known as an “empath”)
Micah Sanders (Noah Gray-Cabey), who is a “technopath” (someone who can communicate with and control electronic devices or machines
Niki Sanders (Ali Lartr), who possesses superhuman strength and an alternate personality in the form of her dead sister
Mohinder Suresh (Sendhil Ramamurthy), a professor of genetics whose blood contains the cure for an infection that only affects those with special powers
Noah Bennet (or Mr Bennet, or the Man in Horn-Rimmed Glasses, or HRG, played by Jack Coleman), who investigates superhuman phenomena under the pretence of being a regular businessman. He claims to aid gifted people by helping them to use their powers, his true intentions are a mystery
Gabriel Gray (or Sylar, played by Zachary Quinto), a serial killer who hunts superhuman people with the aim of killing them and stealing their powers.
Heroes has a main story that continues through each episode, intertwined with the introduction of new characters learning of their superhuman powers and reacting to the discovery. The show has been Golden Globe nominated for Best TV Drama and Emmy Award nominated for Outstanding Drama Series.
