Enough Rope with Andrew Denton is a one hour ABC talk show that is both hosted and executive produced by Andrew Denton that began screening in 2003. Its name is an allusion to the popular saying “give them enough rope and they will hang themselves”, and this is a reference to Denton’s ability as an interviewer to extract very personal information from the guests on the show.

Most of the program’s interviews are filmed live in front of an audience at an ABC studio. However, Denton also occasionally flies out of the country to conduct interviews with high-profile guests. Some of the more famous guests to have appeared on the show include former United States President Bill Clinton, U2 front man Bono, director Steven Spielberg, and United States politician-turned-environmental activist Al Gore. As well as these high-profile guests, Enough Rope also attempts to tell the stories of ordinary Australians. To this effect, Denton moves into the audience each week to interview once of its number.

Denton has been praised for his meticulous pre-interview research, and his ability to take a no-holds-barred approach to interviewing while still maintaining tact and composure. This has allowed him over the years to elicit very frank and personal responses from his guests. The show received a Walkey Award for Broadcast Interviewing and an AFI Award for Light Entertainment in its first year, and another AFI award in 2004.
