Australia’s Next Top Model is the Australian version of former supermodel Tyra Banks’s program America’s Next Top Model. The show is produced by Granada Television and screened on Foxtel’s Fox 8 channel, which also airs the show’s American counterpart. The first series (or ‘cycle’) of the show first appeared in January 2006. Three such ‘cycles’ have been produced so far, with a third currently in production. While the show was originally presented by model Erika Heynatz, it is currently hosted by Johdi Meares, after Heynatz’s departure to appear on Channel Seven’s It Takes Two and embark upon a singing career.

Each ‘cycle’ of Top Model begins with the selection of between 10 and 14 young aspiring female models from all over Australia to take part in the show. Each week the girls not only take part in photo shoots, but also receive training about a particular aspect of life as a professional model, and are assigned challenges or activities that test this training. The contestants’ performances in both the photo shoot and challenge tasks are assessed by a panel of judges which currently includes host Meares, designer Alex Perry, model Charlotte Dawson, and fashion photographer Jez Smith. These judges eliminate one contestant each week, until the final contestant left standing is crowned ‘Australia’s Next Top Model’. Quite apart from the competitive aspect of the program, Top Model fans also enjoy the show’s focus on the often tense relationships and interactions between the contestants, who share accommodation during the course of the program.
