All Saints is a hospital-based drama series of weekly, one hour episodes. Beginning in 1998, All Saints has featured some of Australia’s most revered actors, including John Howard and Georgie Parker. Each episode features an independent main story whilst continually developing storylines of regular characters. Judith McGrath (who plays nurse Yvonne Ryan) is the show’s only remaining original cast member.

Situated in fictional suburban Sydney hospital “All Saints Western General” (hence the show’s title), most of the programme’s external scenes are filmed at Concord Repatriation Hospital in Sydney’s Inner West, with additional exterior, and some interior, scenes being filmed at Ku-Ring Gai Hospital. The show initially focused on Ward 17, or “the garbage ward” – named for its function of accommodating patients unable to find a hospital bed elsewhere. Following a drop in ratings, however, the show shifted to the Emergency Department in 2004, bringing a busier atmosphere and quicker pace.

Nominated for numerous awards at the Logies (the Australian television awards, named after television inventor John Logie Baird) every year since 1999, All Saints has won the “Most Popular Program” award twice (2001, 2002) and “Most Popular Australian Program” once in 2003. Many actors have won awards for their individual performance in the series also, such as Erik Thomson for “Most Popular Actor”, Georgie Parker for “Most Popular Actress” and “Most Popular Personality On Australian Television” (both in 2001) and Libby Tanner twice for “Most Popular Actress”. Averaging roughly 1.4 million viewers per episode, the show has also featured on The Sydney Morning Herald’s top ten most watched TV programmes.
