Born at Buckingham Palace on 14 November, 1948, Prince Charles (official title: Charles, Prince of Wales) is the heir to the British throne, son of Queen Elizabeth II and father to Princes William and Harry.

In November 1956 Charles began attending Hill House School, which was a break from tradition as heirs to the throne were previously educated by a private tutor. Two years later he became a boarder at Cheam School. Charles began high school in 1962 at Gordonstoun and spent two terms at Timbertop, Victoria, Australia as an exhange student in 1966. It has been reported that Charles disliked his time at high school, where he was often bullied. He would later send his own children to Eton College instead of Gordonstoun. The prince attended Cambridge University.

In July, 1969, the prince was invested as Prince of Wales by the Queen before his university graduation in 1970. Prince Charles began training in the Royal Air Force in March, 1971 and by September had decided to pursue a career in the Royal Navy. He served in the Royal Navy for five years and was qualified as a helicopter and fighter pilot.

Prince Charles met Lady Diana Spencer in 1977 and proposed marriage to her in February, 1981. They were married on 29 July, 1981, at St Paul’s Cathedral. Diana was granted the title of ‘Princess of Wales’. By the mid to late ‘80s, it was evident that the marriage was unstable, with the couple living apart and rarely appearing in public together. The prince’s well reported affair with Camilla Parker Bowles was no doubt a contributor to the marriage breakdown. Prince Charles and Princess Diana were officially divorced on 28 August, 1996. The marriage produced two sons; Prince William (born 1982) and Prince Harry (born 1984).

After his divorce and the death of Lady Diana in 1997, Prince Charles continued his relationship with Parker Bowles and married her on 9 April, 2005.
