Born on 27 March, 1970, in Long Island, New York, Mariah Carey is a successful solo artist with a career spanning almost two decades. Carey began singing at the age of three and was trained by her mother who was an opera singer and vocal coach. She went on to become a demo singer and then a backup singer before meeting Columbia Records executive, Tommy Mottola, at a party. Mottola was impressed with her demo tape and signed her to a recording contract.

Carey’s debut album, Mariah Carey, released in mid-1990, reached number one in the U.S. and included four number one singles. She co-wrote the album and has continued to do so with all of her music throughout her career. She followed her debut with second album, Emotions (1991), which was not as successful. It wasn’t until the release of her third album, Music Box, in 1993 that Carey achieved international success.

Music Box included some of Carey’s most well known tracks, such as the number one hits “Dreamlover”, “Without You” and “Hero”. It is her most successful album worldwide to date. Her 1994 album, Merry Christmas, went on to become the most successful Christmas album of all time and included the hit single, “All I Want for Christmas Is You”. This was followed by the immensely successful album, Daydream, which was released in 1995 and included the singles “Fantasy”, “One Sweet Day” and “Always Be My Baby”.

Carey’s next album releases were Butterfly (1997), Rainbow (1999), Glitter (2001), Charmbracelet (2002), The Emancipation of Mimi (2005) and E=MC² (2008). She also released an Oscar-winning duet with Whitney Houston titled “When You Believe”, for the Prince of Egypt (1998) soundtrack. The Glitter album is the soundtrack to the film Glitter, which Carey starred in. The film was both a critical and commercial failure.

Throughout her lengthy and very public career Carey has managed to keep her personal and romantic life relatively private. She was married to record executive Tony Mottola from 1993 to 1997 and was romantically linked to baseball player Derek Jeter soon after. Their relationship was brief and ended in 1998.
