Lleyton Glynn Hewitt was born on 24 February 1981 in Adelaide, Australia and grew up playing Australian Rules football. Instead of following in his father’s footsteps, while in the juniors, he was ranked #1 in the Aussie under-18 division in 1996. He soon started to play professional tennis & turned pro becoming one of the youngest winners of an Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) tournament when he won the 1998 Next Generation Adelaide International, defeating Andre Agassi in the semifinals.
Hewitt first played for Australia's Davis Cup team in 1999, and competed at Sydney in the 2000 Summer Olympics. He followed his US Open win with a victory at Wimbledon in 2002, defeating David Nalbandian in the final. On 19 November 2001, Hewitt became the youngest male ever to be ranked World number one (20 years old) and stayed No. 1 until 28 April 2003. As of 14 January 2008, Hewitt is world No. 22 tennis champion.
Hewitt has won 25 major singles titles including the 2001 US Open, 2002 Wimbledon, the 2001 and 2002 Tennis Masters Cup and the 2000 US Open doubles championships. He also reached the finals of the 2004 US Open and Tennis Masters Cup as well as the 2005 Australian Open.
Hewitt was formerly engaged to famous tennis player Kim Clijsters however the relationship didn’t last and the pair eventually split. He is now married to Australian actress Rebecca Cartwright and they married on July 21, 2005. In that same year their daughter, Mia Rebecca Hewitt, was born.
