Born in Essex, England on 1 July 1949, John Farnham is a successful Australian singer also nicknamed “Farnsy”, “Whispering Jack” and “The Voice”. Farnham moved to Australia in 1959 and began pursuing a career in music once he had left school. After winning a competition with the band Strings Unlimited, Farnham was offered a solo contract and released his first single, Sadie, in late 1967.
Farnham released solo albums throughout the 1970s before joining the Little River Band as lead singer in 1981. After only three years and three albums, Farnham left the Little River Band amongst reports that his relationship with the band was on the rocks.
Farnham made the move back to solo and 1986 saw the release of his album Whispering Jack, which included the singles Pressure Down, You’re the Voice and Touch of Paradise. Throughout the 1980s and ‘90s, Farnham continued to release successful solo albums including Age of Reason (1988), Chain Reaction (1990) and Then Again (1993).
In 1998 Farnham performed with Olivia-Newton John and Anthony Warlow as part of The Main Event tour. In 2000 he teamed up with Newton-John once more to perform Dare to Dream at the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games. In 2002 he released the album, The Last Time, and announced what would be his last major tour.
Since The Last Time tour in 2002, Farnham has performed with Tom Jones (2005) and Stevie Nicks (2006) and also performed at the Closing Ceremony of the 2006 Commonwealth Games. He is married to Jillian Billman and they have two sons, Robert and James.
