Catherine Elise Blanchett was born in Ivanhoe, a suburb of Melbourne, Victoria in 1969 and graduated from the National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA) in 1992. She began her acting career at the Sydney Theatre Company in 1993. Since then, Blanchett has starred in both stage and film roles, some of her most famous including Elizabeth, The Aviator, Notes on a Scandal, The Lord of the Rings trilogy, The Gift and Babel. In 2005 Blanchett won an Oscar for her portrayal of Katharine Hepburn in The Aviator, also starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Beckinsale.

Blanchett married Andrew Upton in 1997. They have two children, Dashiell John and Roman Robert. Blanchett and Upton will become artistic directors of the Sydney Theatre in 2008. Blanchett is currently pregnant with her third child due in April 2008.
