Born in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia on 23 June 1947, Bryan Brown has become synonymous with Australian Cinema. Originaly an Insurance salesman, Brown left his job to go into the theatre in both London and Sydney. He began acting for television in 1978, in the television mini-series, Against the Wind. He went played in a number of other television mini-series that made him a household name in Australia, including A Town Like Alice (1981), The Thorn Birds (1983) and The Shiralee (1987).
Brown has continued to live in Australia with his actress wife, Rachel Hunter, and their three children, but has had some success also in the US. In 1988, he starred alongside Tom Cruis in Cocktail, and in the same year was highly praised for his performance in Gorillas in the Mist: The Story of Dian Fossey. He also appeared alongside Ben Stiller and Jennifer Aniston in the 2004 film, Along Came Polly.
He has been an avid supporter of the Australian film industry for many years, and has starred in many of Australia’s finest films in the last decade, including Two Hands (1999), MulletI (2001), and Dirty Deeds (2002). He will also play the role of King Carney in Baz Luhrmann’s new film, Australia, which has one of the all-time steallar casts in Australian film history, including Nicole Kidman, Hugh Jackman, Jack Thompsom, Barry Otto, Bruce Spence, David Wenham, Ben Mendelsohn, Bill Hunter, David Gulpilil and his son Jamie, and John Jarret. The film is due for release some time in 2008.
