Born in Houston, Texas in 1981, Beyoncé Knowles is currently one of the world’s biggest stars—but it wasn’t always the case. The daughter of Mathew and Tina Knowles and granddaughter of French-speaking Louisiana Creoles, she began singing in a church choir as a soloist, and had already begun dancing and singing in competitions by the age of seven.
As a teenager, she formed a quartet with three of her closest friends, LaTavia Roberson, LeToya Luckett and cousin Kelly Rowland. The quartet, under the name of Girl’s Tyme entered Star Search, but failed to win. Knowles’ father, however, decided to help the girls realise their dream, quitting his six-figure salary job to manage their group.
After several name changes, they settled on the biblically based “Destiny’s Child”, and had some success with their first album, Destiny’s Child in 1998. The Song “No, No, No Pt2”, with The Fugees’ Wyclef Jean, made it to number 3 on the Hot 100 Chart, while the other tracks did little.
Luckett and Roberson left the group in an unfriendly split, when the 2000 video of “Say My Name” was released with two new and members, Michelle Williams and Farrah Franklin. Franklin later left the group, and Destiny’s Child remained a trio until their final split in 2006.
Knowles has gone on to a stellar solo music and film career, most recently winning acclaim for her role in Dream Girls alongside Denzel Washington. She has released two studio albums, Dangerously in Love and B’day, and is due to return to the studio to begin making a third. She has gradually taken more creative control of all musical projects. In 2001, she became the first African American woman to win the Songwriter of the Year Award from the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers, USA.
Knowles has been dating rapper Jay-Z since 2002 and it has been reported that the two were married on 4 April, 2008.
