Born in Waco, Texas, on 3 October, 1984, Ashlee Simpson is as famous for being Jessica Simpson’s little sister as she is for being a singer and actress in her own right. More rocky in style than her diva sister, Simpson has proved that she can maintain a separate identity, and has avoided coming under the shadow of her big sister. Considering she began her career as one of Jessica’s back-up dancers, it’s an achievment in itself.

After signing a deal with Geffen Records, the label best known in the 1990s for its explosive roster of grunge artists, Simpson released her first albumn, Autobiography in 2004 to mixed reviews. Although debuting at number 1 in the US charts and reaching triple platinum status, Rolling Stone’s Peter Relic wrote that it was a "mundane melange of Avril-ish brat pop and Sheryl Crow cod rock". E! News took a bit more diplomatic approach, writing: “Even if it doesn't wow you, Autobiography may surprise you."

In 2005, Simpson released her second albumn, I am Me, which did not perform as well as her first album, only selling a total of 900,000 copies. Her third albumn, Colour Outside the Lines is due for release in 2008.

Simpson has had moderate success as an actress, making regular appearances in 7th Heaven, guest appearances in Malcolm in the Middle and had her own MTV series The Ashlee Simpson Show, which ran for only two seasons in 2004 and 2005. She also made appearances in her sister’s MTV reality program Newlyweds.

Simpson has fallen from performance grace on two well-known occasions. She was widely criticised for using a backing tape during her performance on Saturday Night Live in 2004, but she later said this was because she was having vocal problems due to recurring reflux. This was followed shortly after by a disastrous performance at the Orange Bowl in Miami, Florida, where some 72,000 spectators booed her off stage.
