Soul singer Amy Winehouse was born on 14 September 1983 in London to Jewish parents. She had her first taste of the spotlight as an extra in an episode of The Fast Show at age 13. By 16 she was singing professionally and starting to chase her music dream. In 2003 her first album Frank caught the attention of critics and scored various award nominations – following the 2004 nomination for a BRIT Award the album went platinum.

In 2006 Amy released her second album, Back To Black which hit number one on the charts repeatedly. It went platinum five times making it the highest selling album of 2007.

The path to fame has been anything but smooth. Her personal life and reputation for “poor impulse control” has been damaging but not devastating. Her fondness for intoxicants has affected her ability to perform, disappointing audiences and creating a lot of negative press. The falling out with her family after marrying long-time on-off boyfriend Blake Fielder-Civil helped to cement her “rebellious child” reputation. Swearing, dreadlocks and a unique fashion sense (at times described as “scruffy”) mark Amy Winehouse out as an unusual kind of star. Worth noting is that her song “Rehab”, about refusing to go to an alcohol rehab centre despite strong encouragement by her management team, was a huge success.

So what’s next? It is rumoured that musical deity, Prince, is considering working with her and she has been described by George Michael, British music icon, as “…the best female vocalist I have ever heard in my entire career, as well as one of the best writers”.

The career of Amy Winehouse is clearly a case of “watch this space”.
